10 Toughest Interview Questions & How to Answer Like a Pro (By Yugal)

Preparing for your next big interview? I’ve got you covered. These are the real, raw, and toughest questions you’ll be asked—and how to answer like a confident, skilled candidate. This article is a sneak peek from my book “How to Answer the 64 Toughest Interview Questions”.

If you're serious about landing your dream job, read these carefully. I’ll also tell you how to get the complete guide at the end!

1. Tell me about yourself.

Trap: Most people ramble or recite their life story. Don't.

Best Answer: Start from your present role and achievements, then match your skills with what the company is looking for. It’s not storytelling, it’s solution-selling. You are the solution.

2. What are your greatest strengths?

Trap: Sounding arrogant or too humble.

Best Answer: Prepare 3–4 strengths with real proof. Share accomplishments, not adjectives. Match each one to the job's top requirements.

3. What are your greatest weaknesses?

Trap: Saying something that disqualifies you—or giving a fake answer like “I work too hard.”

Best Answer: Be honest, but show how you’ve improved. Example: “I used to overanalyze, now I’ve learned to trust the process more and take smarter decisions.”

4. Tell me about something you did—or failed to do—that you now feel a little ashamed of.

Trap: Interviewers are fishing for guilt. Don’t take the bait.

Best Answer: “I regularly reflect on my actions to avoid regrets. I review each day to see if I’ve missed anything important and correct it right away.”

5. Why are you leaving your current job?

Trap: Never badmouth your boss, team, or company.

Best Answer: “I’m looking for a better growth path and alignment with my goals. I’m proud of what I’ve done but feel it’s the right time for the next challenge.”

6. The Silent Treatment

Trap: Interviewer stares at you after your answer. You panic and overtalk.

Best Answer: Smile, pause, and say politely, “Would you like me to elaborate?” Confidence speaks louder than nervous chatter.

7. Why should I hire you?

Trap: Giving a generic, boring answer.

Best Answer: Match your top 3 strengths directly to their biggest needs. Back each with real achievements. Be their best solution.

8. Aren’t you overqualified for this position?

Trap: They fear you’ll leave soon.

Best Answer: “My experience means I can contribute from day one. I’m here for meaning, not just a title. I want to grow long-term with this team.”

9. Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Trap: Too vague or overly ambitious can both backfire.

Best Answer: “If the work remains challenging, I’d love to grow into a leadership role here and take on more ownership within the team.”

10. Describe your ideal company, location, and job.

Trap: They’re checking if you truly want this role.

Best Answer: “Honestly, your company checks every box for me — purpose-driven, collaborative, and a place where I can grow and contribute long term.”
